Winnowed Blog (2012): A Conversation with Abhik Mazumdar

This early interview captures Abhik Mazumdar’s philosophy, humour, and passion for aquascaping — long before it was a recognised design discipline in India.

A Note from Abhik (2025):

When this conversation was first published in 2012, I had no idea where aquascaping would take me. I was still navigating a quiet passion — one that existed between courtrooms and coral sand, between structure and stillness.

Looking back, what strikes me is not how much has changed, but how much has stayed the same. The humour, the hesitations, the obsession with balance — it was all already there.

This interview captures a version of me that was still trying to explain why a submerged log or an arrangement of rocks could feel like home.

I’m grateful to still be building worlds, one tank at a time.

— Abhik Mazumdar

This interview traces Abhik’s journey from being a lawyer to designing living aquatic systems, and touches on everything from design thinking to the influence of Gerald Durrell. It’s not just a story about him — it also reflects his way of seeing the world.
